Lunchlezing BetterBe

"Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants as long as it is black" - Henry Ford

The national market for new vehicles has approximately 15.000 distinct vehicle types. Each of these vehicles can be equipped with numerous options, allowing a customer to choose anything from paint colors to parking sensors and extra seats. These options come with complicated rulings telling which options must go together, which options cannot go together, and how choosing one option influences the price of another.

A vehicle typically has between 10 and 500 options and the total search space of all configured vehicles, taking into account the rulings, is a several trillion (10^18).

Searching through this space, taking into account desired features and budget constraints, is essentially a huge maximum satisfiability problem. At BetterBe we have developped a service that can navigate this search space in under 2 seconds.

The lunch talk will address the connection between the real world of vehicle data and the theoretical world of maximum satisfiability and how such a problem is practically solved.
