Lunch lecture Klaas Sikkel

Pictures at an Exhibition and the Music of the Mighty Handful

Whereas our lunch lectures are usually given by companies with subjects that relate to our fields of study, we're doing it a little differently this time around. On Tuesday 15 December, none other than Klaas Sikkel will be giving a lunch lecture. In this lunch lecture, Klaas will take you through the story and some of the music of the “Mighty Handful”, a group of revolutionary composers in Russia in the late 19th century. Probably their most well-known piece is “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky. Originally composed for piano solo, it became popular in the orchestral version by Ravel and the rock version of Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

In case you're wondering who Klaas Sikkel is, ask some older-years TCS and BIT students and you'll find that many mention the great passion with which Klaas gave his lectures. Klaas was one of the most popular lecturers among BIT and TCS students until his retirement in September 2019 and nowadays, he is involved with the “Muziekbank”, a music resource centre in Enschede, founded long ago by UT students.
