About the Study Tour and the Study

The study tour will award 15EC for bachelors or 10EC for masters. In order to get the EC both bachelor and master students will have to follow 3 courses. The courses will take place in the following semester, when which subject will take place is yet to be announced.

  • - Course 1: K3+K4 2015
  • - Course 2: K1 2016 (first 3 weeks)
  • - Course 3: K1 Study Tour (weeks 4-6)

The theme of this year's study tour is: Intelligent and Secure Cities. This theme will have a couple subtracks and each participant will be assigned a specific track in which they will do research during the theme course. Also during the study tour itself the companies visited will have a relation to the tracks and the company reports will be focused on the tracks.

The track are:
  • Security & Verification: how safe and secure are those intelligent cities actually? In this track you will focus on learn what security means in intelligent cities and how the systems can be verified.
  • Smart Grids & Dynamic Systems: cities require an enormous amount of electricity. How do they make sure that they are not wasting energy but optimizing it instead? How can the use of dynamic systems improve the efficiency in these cities? These are the kind of questions that can be researched in this track.
  • Big Data: it will not come as a suprise that these cities gather a lot of data. In this data is a lot of information that can be used to improve the city. In this track you have the option to research how this enormous amount of data can be stored efficiently, but also what possibilties the data might have.
  • Networking: do you want to know how the networks are in intelligent cities? How to detect botnets in these networks and how intrusion is detected? Then networking is the track for you. These are just some examples.
  • Sensoring: how are sensors used in intelligent cities, in what way are they contributing to a more intelligent city and what information do they provide that can be used for analysis. These are some of the question you might expect to research when chosing this track.
  • Robotics: these days robots are getting more and more popular and start to get useful functionalities. In this track you will do research on how robotics can help in intelligent cities.

During the start of each of the courses there will be an introduction lecture. During this lecture it will be discussed what is expected from each participant and when the deadlines are. Once the participants have been selected each participant will be asked to give up a top 3 of tracks and based on these preferences tracks will be assigned. In the boxes below you can see what the subjects are and what you are going to research in each of them.

International Study Tour Preparation

International Study Tour Preparation

This subject consists of learning the differences in culture in the countries to be visited and the Netherlands. This is done by doing a PESTLE-analysis and the Porter's Diamond. They provide a good view of the culture in the destinations. International Study Tour Preparation consists of writing papers and having presentations so that everyone can hear the research that has been done.

Theme Course

Theme Course

The theme course will be a "mini bachelorreferaat". In the theme course each participant will do a research at one of the supervisors based on one of the tracks. As said above the tracks will be assigned based on the preferences of the participants, so that every participant will do research in an area that they are interested in. For the theme course each participant will write an invidual paper and there is a final session in which each participant presents their results.

Study Tour

Study Tour

During the study tour we are going to visit different kind of companies in all countries. Each participant will be assigned 2 companies on which they have to do pre-research. This consists of everything that can be found on the internet, ranging from amount of employees to in what tracks they are performing business. After the study tour these researches will be updated with the new information found during the company visits.
